Soen: G'schichten ausm Laubhaufen

Okay folks… because I just had a major FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!-moment I need to tell you all to save you and your computers (probably).

Last month when I came back from munich I started my computer and was like “-the hell? Why’s the monitor getting no signal?”
It just did “mmmmhhhblink…. mmmmhhblink” with its little red standby-light. (Meaning: “I DON’T GET A FRIGGIN’ SIGNAL, USER! DO SOMETHING!”)
Okay, so I rebooted the computer, but it was all the same as before. The usb-mouse was alright and glowing. The usb-keyboard was like “omgI’mdead”. I heard the “vrrrr” of the drives and the cooler, so obviously these had power. The monitor still did the “mmmmhhhblink…. mmmmhhblink” with it’s red light.

So… no one used my computer while I was away and I didn’t change anything when I came back. I just turned it on. But something obviously was wrong. So me and my dad brought the computer to the computer-guy (good friend of my dad) who put the machine together in the first place.
After a day or so he phoned us and told us the motherboard as well as the power adaptor were broken. Why? No one knew. But as the computer was pretty new (some months old) there was still a guarantee on everything so he switched the motherboard and the power adaptor of the same kind and I got my computer back.

Everything worked again.

Now the same thing happened AGAIN!

I was really mad. I thought “GODDAMMIT! Why can’t he (the computer-guy) put together a decent work-pc for me ONCE?! *GROWL*” but thenI thought for a moment. What changed in the past few months, that could possibly the source of these disasters? (And they are disasters to me, because I NEED this computer for my work.)

Then I realized, that it was just the power strips had changed. I bought them around the beginning of the year to save electricity. But they couldn’t possibly kill my computer, right … RIGHT?

After searching the internet on the possibility of a energy saving power strip killing your computer, if you are a good little hedgy and turn it off every night, I came to the conclusion that you SHALL NOT plug your PC in a power strip like this:

NEVER EVER.

But no one told it was bad for my computer to cut it off the energy every night after properly shutting it down. So why would I not do that?

Now I know.
And this is important to all of you who plugged their computer into one of those.

Modern PCs are not meant to be cut off the electricity completely every night. Certain processes still need energy, even if you shut down the computer and turned it off. Plus the little energy-peaks when you turn the power strip on again do your computer no good.
Even if you like your environment and want to save energy, this is obviously the wrong way if you want to maintain a healthy relationship with your working machine.
So for god’s sake plug the main power cable for your computer into a normal power strip or even better a normal electric socket.

I did now, even if it doesn’t do me any good right now. I will need to take my computer to the computer-guy again tomorrow and hope he’ll switch the broken parts again without taking money (which I just don’t have at the moment ;_;).

NACHTRAG

Okay, das Glück ist wohl mit den Doofen. Ich weiß nicht, wie - und eigentlich ist es mir auch egal, Hauptsache es läuft - aber als ich den PC heute morgen noch einmal getestet habe, fuhr er normal hoch. (Okay, er fragte natürlich nach ob er Windoof im abgesicherten Modus hochfahren soll, weil er ja mitten im Betrieb abgekackt ist, aber sonst...)
Glücklicherweise sind auch alle Daten erhalten geblieben. Aber auf den Schreck von gestern Abend habe ich nun beschlossen nebst der Steckdosen-Operation noch etwas zu ändern: regelmäßige, automatische Backups meiner Dateien auf einer externen Festplatte.
Vermutlich tun die meisten von euch das schon lange und ich bin einfach nur lahmarschig in der Hinsicht. Aber bisher hat es mir immer gereicht, wenn ich ein Projekt abgeschlossen und dieses dann auf eine oder mehrere DVDs gebrannt habe um mir ein Backup zu erstellen. Oft schieb ich auch wichtige Arbeitsdaten auf meinen Laptop, wenn ich ihn zum Arbeiten mitnehme, aber eben auch nicht immer.

Das Problem bei diesen Backups ist in meinem Fall: Ich weiß genau, ich vergess es andauernd.
Oder was mache ich, wenn der PC mitten im Betrieb doch mal wieder den Geist aufgibt, weil die Hardware langfristig von der Kippschaltersteckerleiste geschädigt ist und ich so Stunden wertvoller Arbeit verliere, weil ich während der Arbeit natürlich nicht daran gedacht hab die Dateien manuell zu kopieren?

Also gegoogelt und nach einer kurzen Weile massenweise Tools gefunden, mit denen man Dateiordner auf lokalen und externen Festplatten synchronisieren kann. (Ergo, der Inhalt des einen Ordners ist immer der gleiche wie der des anderen. Löscht man im einen eine Datei, wird beim nächsten Synchronisieren in dem anderen auch die Datei gelöscht oder geupdated und so weiter.)
Was aber leider zumindest alle Freeware-Programme, die ich gefunden habe, gemein haben, ist dass sie trotz allem manuell funktionieren. Man muss zwar nicht mehr die Dateien einzeln rüberschieben, aber das Knöpfchen zum synchronisieren muss man trotzdem selbst drücken.
Das wollt ich ja nun nicht.
Ich hätte gern ein Programm, dass alle schlagmichtot Minuten (sagen wir 15 ^^ 15 ist eine gute Zahl) eine Synchronisation unternimmt, damit mir maximal die Arbeit von ner Viertelstunde flöten geht.
Wieder ein bisschen gegoogelt und etwas gefunden, was wohl die meisten (inklusive mir) in ihrem gesamten PC-User-Leben mit dem Arsch nicht angeguckt haben: die Aufgabenplanung.

Das ist ein Programm, das auf jedem Windows Rechner fest drauf ist. Man kann dem PC darin sagen "zu der und der Zeit machst du das und das und wiederholst das zu der und der Zeit". Normalerweise braucht man das nicht. Wofür auch. XD
Aber für mein Vorhaben ideal.

So geht's:
Erst einmal natürlich eine Externe besorgen (glücklicherweise hab ich eine kleine 80GB) und eine halbwegs intelligente Ordnerstruktur anlegen.
Dann das SYNCTOY von Microsoft runterladen und installieren. Die Leute haben nämlich eigens ein Programm für lau für Windoof bereitgestellt. Da ist die Kompatibilität am sichersten.
Und danach folgt man dieser netten Beschreibung.
